It was another marathon session at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships Yerevan 2012 with 80 contests taking place as 160 boxers battled it out for a place in the last 16. It was a day to remember with some of the talent on show really making their mark.
The two top ranked Light Welterweight (64kg) boxers went head-to-head in the second preliminary round with Greece's Strandja Memorial Tournament bronze medallist virtuoso Alexandros Tsanikidis pitted against Russia's AIBA Junior World Champion and European Junior Champion Sergey Sobylinskiy. Tsanikidis moved up a weight class before these championships and he was in the sublime form coming into this bout. The Russian could not contain his opponent and found himself 15:7 after two rounds. Sobylinskiy tried hard to claw his way back but the Tsanikidis could not be stopped as he won this sensational bout 21:13. The Greek wonderkid will now meet China's Wang Qingqiu, who eliminated Ukraine's Khazar Aliev.
Mongolia's National Elite Championships bronze medallist Gandulam Mungun-Erdene won each of the rounds against Canada's 18-year-old Brandenburg Youth Cup silver medallist Evan Gillard of the Motor City Boxing Club to also advance deeper in the competition. Ireland's Keith Flavin, who won the National Youth Championships and claimed the gold medal in the National U23 Championships, then fought Russian Youth National Championships silver medallist Pavel Gunchenko. Flavin started well to move into a 7:3 lead after round one and brimming with confidence, expertly saw out the bout to record an impressive victory.
Bulgaria's National U22 Champion and Ahmet Comert Youth Tournament bronze medallist Tinko Banabakov made a successful debut on the third competition day and eliminated the host nation's youngest participant Hayrik Nazaryan. The Tarnovo-based Light Flyweight (46-49kg) was scintillating in the second round which paved the way for his win.
Mauritius' 17-year-old African Cup bronze medallist and National Elite Champion Yanish Hurpersad then faced Venezuela's Leonardo Padilla, who had eliminated China's Shan Jun in the first preliminary round. The Mauritian Bantamweight (56kg) led 6:3 after round one but Padilla received good instructions from his corner and the change in tactic saw the Venezuelan turn the fight on its head to progress.
Diego De La Hoya, Mexico's 18-year-old National Olympiad winner and Independence Cup silver medallist, started boxing at the age of six and has accumulated over 250 bouts in his career but that was not enough against Mongolia's two-time Youth National Champion Norovbal Otgontumur. After a tactical first round the Mongolian boxer controlled the contest and triumphed over his Central American rival 11:6.
AIBA Junior World Championships bronze medallist and Eurasian Junior Games winner Magomed-Rashid Dzhabrailov from Russia was still unbeaten in 2012 coming into his fight with England's AIBA Junior World Champion and European Junior Champion Pat McCormack. Dzhabrailov had the advantage after the first round and continued to dominate in the latter stages to eliminate the first English boxer in Yerevan.
Alexei Guibert, the youngest Cuban at these championships, claimed bronze medal at the Kadyrov Memorial Tournament in Grozniy and met Dominican Republic's Panamerican Youth Champion Sparkinson Almonte on day three of competition in Yerevan. Guibert shocked his tough rival and demonstrated sumptuous technique during the bout to win 22:8. His next opponent will be Kazak favourite and Klitchko Brothers Youth Cup winner Adilbek Adilzhan.
France's Brandenburg Youth Cup silver medallist Yannick Dehez, who has been boxing since 2005, had his bid for glory thwarted by Dominican Republic's Panamerican Youth Champion Carlos Adames. The 176cm tall Caribbean boxer, still unbeaten in 2012, was outstanding as he won all three rounds against his tough European opponent.
17-year-old two-time Central American Champion Lester Martinez from Guatemala must have learnt quite a lot from Welsh Head Coach Colin Jones at the AIBA Road to London Program earlier this year. The talented Light Welterweight (64kg) dominated Ricky Rowlands, who had Jones in his corner, to win comfortably. Martinez's triumph in Yerevan ensured the best ever performance from a Guatemalan boxer in a worldwide event.
The youngest participant in Armenia, Netherlands' Wouter Djokic, who won the Golden Gloves of Vojvodina Youth Tournament and was awarded the best boxer trophy at the tournament, showed his class by eliminating Israel's Makar Mazay Tournament bronze medallist Daniel Daskalo The young Dutch Welterweight (69kg) will be one of the star attractions at the 2013 European Youth Championships which will be held in Rotterdam.
Also at Welterweight, Azerbaijan's Agalarov Youth Tournament silver medallist Sagi Salehli faced Ukraine's European Junior Championships silver medallist Artem Soloviov in a fascinating battle. The Azeri boxer did not find the winning tactic against his tough opponent with Soloviov moving into the next round.
British Champion Aaron Bird from Wales defeated Russia's European Youth Championships silver medallist Magomed Madiev at the Brandenburg Youth Cup in August but could not repeat the feat in their re-match in Yerevan. The Russian Middleweight (75kg) claiming this one to make it to the last 16.
Italy's top youth boxer, European Youth Championships quarter-finalist Giuseppe Ranno was another to suffer at the hands of a Ukrainian. European Junior Championships silver medallist Oleksandr Khyzniak had too much about him and the 17-year-old ensured his presence in the third round with a stunning 21:11 victory.
Tomorrow sees the Flyweights (52kg), Lightweights (60kg), Heavyweights (91kg) and Super Heavyweights (91+kg) take to the ring with the winners booking their places for the quarter-finals.

Τέλος απο καθαρή ατυχία ηττήθηκε ο πρωταθλητής μας στην κατηγορία των 91 κιλών Αράπογλου Φώτης απο τον Κροάτη Marin Mindoljevic.
